About the Syrian Hamster
Syrian hamsters are territorial from around eight weeks old and cannot be housed together under any circumstances. They need far more space than most pet shop cages provide: UK welfare guidance points to a minimum of 100cm × 50cm of unbroken floor space, with deep bedding for burrowing and a large solid-surface wheel. They are active at night and dislike being woken during the day.
